The Golden Quest Begins: Jordan Stolz's Olympic Journey
In a thrilling start to his Olympic campaign, U.S. speedskating sensation Jordan Stolz has etched his name into the record books. But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a little unexpected.
Milan witnessed history on Wednesday as Stolz, the undisputed skating superstar, claimed gold and shattered the Olympic record in the 1,000-meter event. With a time of 1:06.28, he left his competitors in the dust, outpacing Jenning de Boo from the Netherlands and Zhongyan Ning from China, who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
"It was a close call," Stolz admitted to NBC News. "Jenning had the lead at the 600-meter mark, and I was worried he might pull ahead. But I dug deep, gave it my all, and managed to overtake him."
Stolz's journey to the top is nothing short of remarkable. At just 17 years old, he made his Olympic debut in 2022, the youngest male athlete on the team. Despite finishing 13th in the 500-meter and 14th in the 1,000-meter, he has since dominated the sport.
His dominance continued with sweeping victories in the 500-meter, 1,000-meter, and 1,500-meter at the world championships in 2023 and 2024. He was crowned the youngest male World Allround champion in 46 years, and his world record-breaking time of 1:05.37 in the 1,000-meter at Salt Lake City in 2024 further solidified his status.
And this is the part most people miss: Stolz's unbeaten streak in the 1,000-meter on the World Cup level, now at 14 races and counting.
On Wednesday, Stolz expressed his surprise at the magnitude of his achievement. "It feels even better than I imagined. It's a huge relief to have that first gold under my belt."
In Milan, Stolz is poised to continue his golden run, with expectations high for him to claim gold in the 500-meter, 1,000-meter, and 1,500-meter events. He might even participate in the men's mass start, adding another layer of excitement to his quest.
If Stolz manages to secure at least three gold medals, he will join the legendary Eric Heiden as the only American, male or female, to achieve such a feat in a single Winter Games.
"I'm glad to have that first gold out of the way," Stolz said. "It's a great feeling to have the crowd's energy, the pressure, and the anticipation behind me now. I know what to expect, and I'm ready for more."
